Slow Food Position Paper: Genetically Modified Organisms

This position paper has been written out of a need to clarify Slow Food’s view of genetically modified organisms and to provide as comprehensive a picture as possible of the problems linked to the use of these crops. In general, our analysis focuses on genetically modified organisms as part of a global agricultural, economic and political system that is increasingly depriving farmers of their own means of production and subsistence, while at the same time concentrating control over food in the hands of multinationals.

Slow Food Position Paper: Seeds

Two models of agriculture exist these days. One is actually oriented towards the production of food, while the other is in - stead focused on producing commodities for the global market. Slow Food promotes the first of these models, which is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable, sensitive to the needs of local communities, attentive to quality, respectful of the environment, democratic and based on grassroots participa - tion. The production and selection of seeds by the local communities themselves is the cornerstone of this agricultural model. The industrial production of seeds, conversely, is the foundation of an agriculture that looks only towards the global market. Over the last century, this industrial agricultural model has led to a significant weakening of Earth’s life support system.
