School Project "Edible Connections"
Who can take part in the project?
The project is aimed at school classes at secondary level 1 and 2 (age 12-18). It adresses school classes from the global south and school classes from Germany.
What is the aim of the project?
Food is particularly suitable for bringing global contexts out of their abstractness as they can be experienced in a variety of sensory and cultural ways. The learners explore their local food worlds and eating habits during excursions and share their findings with each other. In constructive dialogue, they train their intercultural competence and cooperation, create understanding for each other. They acquire the necessary knowledge to deal with common goods in everyday life in a more appreciative and careful way. The intercultural encounter should lead to a critical reflection of their own purchasing decisions and a feeling of global solidarity.
What does the implementation of the project look like in practice?
In three sessions spread over the school year, the pupils deal with the challenges of the global food trade and the ecological consequences of food production. In addition to theoretical input, they explore food trade on the basis of an excursion day. They also deal with the food system of their partner country and communicate directly with their exchange partners via video call. The students practise a culture of global cooperation by engaging in an appreciative transcultural dialogue about securing global common goods.
How can school classes participate?
Slow Food Germany will run the project in schools until the end of 2021. Interested schools can still apply until the middle of the year at s.diettrich@slowfood.de
Materials for the project
Slow Food Germany has produced a workbook for the project. It can be used by teachers and educational stakeholders to structure virtual dialogues among students in a goal-oriented way. It contains tasks, games, space for notes and tips for the exchange.
In addition, we have prepared handouts for teachers. You can also download the english version here.
